Thousands of villagers living around Lake Mainit in Agusan del Norte have been displaced when the lake overflowed due to heavy rains on January and February 2011. Portions of the national highway linking Butuan and Surigao cities have been flooded, too. Hundreds of commuters were stranded for more than three days as buses and even heavy trucks could not cross the flooded national highway.
On mid-January, thousands of villagers living in the lakeshore have already evacuated. The said it is the first time that the lake overflowed and reached the national highway.
